Sit Up Straight!

How many times have you found yourself slumping today? Leaning into your chair whilst on the phone, or hunched over your keyboard furiously typing out replies to all the emails that came in over the weekend. You’re not alone. Did you know more than half UK adults over the age of 40 are suffering from persistent back and neck pain and posture has a lot to do with it.

A poll of over 2000 over-40’s revealed 51% regularly suffer from debilitating aches and pains and whilst most people cited gardening 🌻 or lifting heavy shopping bags 🛍, 25% blamed years of sitting in an office chair! 🙇‍♀️🙇‍♂️ Andrew Gallagher, chief operating officer for Phynova Joint and Muscle relief tablets, which commissioned the study said:

Living with pain puts a huge strain upon people, often preventing them doing the things they love and triggering mood swings and depression. As a result it can also put a lot of pressure upon peoples relationships

Now it’s unlikely you can give up all these day to day tasks in your life like shopping, lifting and maybe even gardening and it’s even less likely you can give up work. So what are three simple things you can do to help improve your posture and ward off back pain?

  1. Get up from your desk and move more. I am sure you’re guilty of sitting at your desk with your head down getting stuck into the day. Just getting up every 30 minutes or so and swinging your arms, rotating your hips and doing a quick side bend will help
  2. Put a post it note on your computer that says “Sit up Straight”. That constant reminder will help prevent slumping. I see so many people try to sit up straight during consultations with me just because they’re aware they’re in a fitness environment and they’re conscious of their posture. So be conscious.
  3. Enrol in a pilates class or ask your HR department to get an instructor in at lunch times – even if its just for 30 minute classes. By learning to engage your core, lengthen your tight muscles and strengthen those deep stabilising muscles you will be helping your back out A LOT. Pilates is a great form of exercise for helping posture. Whether this is Mat Pilates or Equipment Pilates. The principles that form the foundation of the session help you feel stronger, more flexible, more mobile and with improved balance. You’re also training those deep stabilising muscles and combined it brings about better posture and less pain. If you think Pilates is just for girls who for those who don’t want to sweat, think again. Pilates is a tough session when done properly.
